Groundhogs are also known as woodchucks, whistle pigs or land beavers in some areas. They are rodents belonging to the same family as squirrels, yet are usually lowland creatures and widely distributed throughout North America. They have short, powerful limbs and claws that are well adapted for digging and can cause considerable damage to landscaped areas around homes. When they tunnel near buildings, undermining and damaging foundations becomes a real possibility. Their burrows cover large areas with at least two separate openings for escape purposes. As adults, they weigh approx. 6 to 8 pounds and can eat @1/3 of their weight in vegetation each day.

Groundhog removal is normally completed by following basic trapping tactics. Live trapping is preferred; habitat manipulation can sometimes be of help, and repellants can be used in some cases to deter them from certain areas. However, if they are not permanently removed, other areas of your property can be damaged.

Can I fill the holes up that the groundhogs are using? Will they go away if I fill the holes?

Groundhog burrows can cover great expanses and the tunnels can go over 100 feet underground.  They always have an escape tunnel, so filling in the visually accessible holes will not deter them.

I seem to get them every year?

There are other access holes which are being used to re-enter the area.
